Schade feedback resistor question

Hi, I'm new here and about to mod my A10 amp. I understand what parts go where., even if I don't know why they'll work. I work on commercial motors for a living. So high voltage and capacitors are something I work with everyday.

The one thing that I don't understand is why you couldn't use a potentiometer instead of a resistor for the schade feedback. My thought is you could tune on the fly for each speaker. Am I missing something? And no I'm not going to try it unless I hear from someone more qualified that it's okay to do.

One concern is the voltages involved. You have hundreds of volts running through it and it would be REALLY bad if it somehow started conducting that voltage to the knob!
