Hi S

This is how a Quad S5 should look inside.

So glad you are feeling better.

Have a great Expona

A12

Finally got round to 2nd group of updates on A12.

Went with Rubycon Caps ( inc PC Boards ones ) and the Mundorf Oil Ali for couplers and Vishal Resistors ( all 3W )

Settled on 580k for shadenfrude link.

In all honesty I am shocked how a handful of Resistors and Capacitors can make such a DRAMATIC DIFFERENCE, it now sounds truly amazing.

Currently listening to John Martyn - Solid Air WOW.

Looks great!!

A12

To add to above, I got the A10 on special at £340, spent £80 on parts - so now have a fabulous sounding tube amp ( my first in 60 years ) for £420, quite ridiculous really.

Listening to it now, really does sound good.

Way back in the 80s had really top end gear - Krell, Spectral, AR, Vandersteen, Kiseki, et al.

A10 / A12

Hi

Finally got round to doing Skunkie mods on my A10 ( now A12 ).

All I need to say is OMG the difference is unbelievable, improved in every aspect especially the BASS !!

Found the 860 ohm to bright so changed that to 680 ohm, might drop down a bit more as still just a tiny bit bright.

Went with TAD rectifier and JJ output tubes, still using as suppled PSvane EL34, must have got a good pair as image is rock solid.

Have JJ E34L and Mundorf caps on order, looking forward to them.

Nice John!

I remember how satisfying it was when I finished my upgrade as well.

Quite a difference!

From own experience, I would recommend trying Shuguang EL34-B:s, lovely full, detailed and yet very sweet bell-like midrange combined with nice top end sissle.

Also alternating with "real" 6CA7:s ( actual beam power tetrodes, not pentodes like EL34 ) , like the ones from JJ, is worth trying, giving significantly tighter and more powerful bottom end as well as a much more open chimey top end than EL34:s. The 6CA7:s all-in-all are somewhat in the KT88 or 6L6 direction sound wise.

The price you pay is a little leaner midrange.

The JJ 6CA7:s have a just fantastic filament glow, worth it in itself, if you ask me.

Best regards, Magnus Gothenburg, Sweden
